West Indies set to play a four-day twilight fixture against a strong Prime Minister’s XI from Wednesday before Tests against in Perth and Adelaide.
The series, which is going to be the last series for Phil Simmons as the head coach of the side, will see Kraigg Brathwaite leading the side in two Test matches at the Perth Stadium (30 November to 4 December) and the Adelaide Oval (8 to 12 December).
As a new addition to the squad, the Selection Panel named Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the left-handed opening batter and son of Windies legend Shivnarine Chandrapaul.
West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite has backed Tagenarine Chanderpaul to succeed at Test level.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul will have the opportunity to push his Test claims from Wednesday in the four-day match against the Prime Minister’s XI in Canberra, which doubles as the West Indies’ last warm-up game.
Chanderpaul was the second-highest run-scorer in West Indies first-class cricket this year, averaging 73.16 while also starring for the country’s A team.
“He has a bright future for West Indies,” Brathwaite told reporters in Canberra.
“Obviously he is a guy who can spend a lot of time at the crease. He just has to do the same things he has done in first-class cricket for Guyana.”
If Chanderpaul gets the nod, it wiil place Brathwaite in a rare position after having opened with his father early in his own career.
“I learned a lot from him,” Brathwaite said of Shivnarine Chandrapaul.
“He is a legend of the game and someone I really looked up to.
“Seeing him spend a lot of time at the crease was remarkable.
“He really deserved that honour. And for us to aspire to be in those shoes and be better, he did a remarkable job for West Indies.”
