Brathwaite says One of the encouraging aspects for West Indies was the debut series of Tagenarine Chanderpaul
All Australian pacers needed on Day 4 was 90 minutes to bowl out West Indies for a paltry 77 in the second innings and pick up a 419-run victory to sweep the Test series 2-0 at the Adelaide Oval.
This is also Australia’s biggest win margin against West Indies, helping them maintain their 100 percent record in day-night Tests at the venue. Australia won the first Test in Perth by 164 runs.
West Indies side resumed day four on 38-4 and was all out in the first session, with Mitchell Starc and Michael Neser doing the damage to end a lopsided campaign.
They haven’t beaten Australia in any Test since May 2003 and their last series win over the Aussies was in 1992/93.
In the first innings, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Anderson Phillip and Roston Chase scored 47, 43 and 34 respectively, but the West Indies were bowled out for 214 in 69.3 overs. After being asked to chase down 497, the visiting team was bowled out inside 41 overs.
Five of their batters, Chanderpaul, Devon Thomas, Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva and Roston Chase got into double digits, but failed to get big scores.
Brathwaite says One of the encouraging aspects for West Indies was the debut series of Tagenarine Chanderpaul who made 51, 45, 47 and 17 at the top of the order alongside the captain.
“It showed that he’s tough,” Brathwaite said. “You’ve got Mitchell Starc coming in at 90mph and you see a guy fighting like that, says a lot about his character. I thought he had a good start to his career and can see him really blossoming to have a superb career for West Indies.”
Brathwaite, himself, meanwhile said he retained the hunger and desire to lead West Indies.
“I love Test cricket and [am] thankful for the job. We’ll see how it goes. I want to lead this team from the front, especially with the bat, that’s my job. As a group we have the talent, we have the ability. It’s for us to believe in ourselves and you learn from all the challenges you go through.”
Brathwaite said there was still a thirst for Test cricket in the West Indies, despite many players favouring T20 leagues around the world.
“There’s a lot of guys playing first-class cricket and aspiring to perform and get to this level,” he said.
“It’s important we keep raising our level … you want to inspire guys to want to represent West Indies, guys to want to get to fight in Australia, and (get) out the number one batters in the world and score a hundred against (them).
“It starts obviously in first-class cricket and it’s all attitude … you come here and you have got to be tough so when you go back down to playing first-class you stay tough.”
You don’t have to worry about him talking to any of the coaches they don’t talk to the players they just sit there eat and collect the green.
