Former West Indies leg-spinner and two-time T20 World Cup champions Samuel Badree is set to take over as assistant coach of Dubai Capitals as the ILT20 starts in the UAE from January 13 to February 12, 2023.
Also, former West Indies coach Phil Simmons stepped down as the head coach of the regional team after the last tour of Australia and he took over as the head coach of the Dubai Capitals franchise in the ILT20 global event. Accordingly, Badree will work as Simmons’ assistant in the future.
In addition, Jamaican pair Rovman Powell and Fabian Allen are also part of the exciting 2023 ILT20 Trophy and will also be represented by the Capitals.
Badree, who was a player when Simmons was in charge of the Windies when they won the Twenty20 World Cup in 2016, said he is keen to continue coaching, which has long been his passion.
“I’ve always enjoyed coaching and working with players. As you would know, I have my own academy (Badree Academy of Sport and Education—BASE) where I work with young players coming through the system.”
A former world number one T20I bowler, Badree became the first West Indian to coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with Delhi Capitals in 2019, and will continue his association with the current global power in the ILT20.
Dubai Capitals is part of the global Capitals franchise which includes IPL team Delhi Capitals as well as South African T20 side Pretoria Capitals.
“I’ve coached in the IPL and I have also done some work with Cricket West Indies and I look forward with keen anticipation to enhance my capacity and acumen as a coach working in this high-profile tournament.”
Badree has worked as a secondary school teacher for many years and now conducts training and workshops for teachers and trainers as a Curriculum Officer.
He also holds a Cricket Australia Level 3 Coaching Certificate in addition to an Executive Master’s Degree in Sports Management as well as a Bachelor of Science in Education.
