In a conversation with Robin Uthappa on JioCinema, West Indies batsman Chris Gayle revealed how AB de Villiers prevented him from becoming the first player to score a double century in T20Is.
Gayle, the most decorated as devastating batsman in T20, holds the record for the highest individual score in the shortest format of the competition.
He scored an unbeaten 175 against Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL. That inning was just 66 balls and consisted of 13 fours and 17 sixes.
Thanks to his excellent batting, RCB managed to score 263 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. In reply, Pune Warriors managed to score 133 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs, where RCB recorded a record 130-run victory.
Almost a decade after that massive knock, Chris Gayle revealed that he had the chance to score 215. But, the left-hander said that AB de Villiers’ innings prevented him from creating more history.
However, the legendary batsman has revealed that he could have easily scored a double century if AB de Villiers had not asked him to deliver the shot.
De Villiers played a brilliant guest in that match and scored 31 runs off 8 balls with 3 fours and a six.
“AB came in and scored like 30 runs in 8 balls or something like that. If the guys aren’t like ‘Chris, give him the strike’, I could have gotten 215.”
Gayle also shared a heartwarming moment after an incident during the match. One of his sixes had broken the nose of a young fan. After the accident, Gayle visited the fan in the hospital and was shocked by the incident.
“The ball ricocheted off the wall and hit a young girl in the nose. Immediately, I went straight to the hospital and saw her with bloody nose and bloody clothes. She was like, ‘why are you sad? Don’t worry, hit more sixes!’ That was so amazing man.”
The Jamaican who explained more about the incident,
“She helped me feel better by telling me that even when she’s in pain she wanted me to hit more sixes. It was a touching moment. The next game, every fan had a placard saying, ‘please break my nose’, so I can come visit them in the hospital.”
