West Indies opener Chris Gayle was one of the most explosive batsmen of his time and revolutionized the game with his batting style that could break any bowling line-up.
The left-handed batsman, who has left many indelible marks in the Indian Premier League, managed to represent various teams in the IPL tournament. Gayle picks three of his best ‘unforgettable moments’ from the IPL’s decade-and-a-half history on JioCinema.
Gayle was quick to recall his 175 against Pune Warriors in 2013. He scored an unbeaten 175 against Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL. That innings was just 66 balls and consisted of 13 fours and 17 sixes.
Thanks to his excellent batting, RCB managed to score 263 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. In reply, Pune Warriors managed to score 133 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 20 overs, where RCB recorded a record 130-run victory.
“I have to say the 175, given the fact it is a record. Getting the fastest hundred off 30 deliveries was fantastic. That will always stand out. So that’s No.1.”
Apart from that, Gayle chose his time working with the King of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan as one of his top three memorable moments.
“Spending time with Shah Rukh Khan off the field, it was something fantastic and superb. What a gentleman he is, and I will always cherish those moments and respect those moments. King Khan, my respect, Sir.”
Mumbai Indians’ rags-to-riches journey in 2015 was among the three that impressed Gayle, and he picked the group-stage match that Mumbai needed to win to avoid relegation by a specific score.
“They needed to qualify within 12 overs at a particular run-rate. They did it and went on to win the championship that year, basically from nothing to champions.”
“Most teams, not only within the IPL but overall can always reflect on that situation and use it like an example to show that you’re never out of it. Never give up in life. When you get a chance, it might be slim, but still go for it, because you just never know.”
Gayle recalled his century against Kolkata Knight Riders on his RCB debut.
“Making my debut for RCB against Kolkata. Getting a century on debut against my former team in Kolkata, in Eden Gardens as well. That was pretty much fantastic.”
