Netherlands beat West Indies in Super Over in the last Group A clash of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 Qualifiers on Monday at the Takashinga Sports Club, Harare.
Batting first, West Indies scored 374/6 in 50 overs with Nicholas Pooran scoring 104* and Brandon King scoring 76.
In reply, Netherlands scored 374/9 in 50 overs Teja Nidamanuru hitting 111. The match was tied at the end of the 50 overs.
The impossible is set to happen in 2023, as the West Indies are in danger of missing out on qualification for the Cricket World Cup set to take place in India later this year. The two-time champions lost to the Netherlands in a high-scoring thriller.
Earlier, the two-time champions put their chances in major jeopardy by
losing to hosts Zimbabwe by 34 runs in a league stage game. From Group A, the Super Six will see Zimbabwe start with four points, while the Netherlands have two and the West Indies.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka also has four points, while Scotland and Oman will carry two points.
How can the West Indies Still Qualify?
The West Indies need major favours from other teams in order to qualify, as they face a nervous wait in the next few days in order to qualify for the event.
The two-time champions need to win all three games they play in the Super Six stage against Sri Lanka, Scotland, and Oman. Further, they need Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe to lose at least two games, while even the Netherlands must lose one game in the Super Four stage.
The West Indies will draw inspiration from Afghanistan, which qualified from a similar situation in 2019.
If Zimbabwe manages to defeat all their upcoming opponents, namely Sri Lanka, Scotland, and Oman from Group B, in the super six stages, then they will automatically qualify for the ODI World Cup 2023.
