IPL 2024 is about four months away and the auction will be held in Dubai next month, but there’s a small matter of who the teams are releasing and retaining, ahead of the auction.
The IPL franchises have till today, that is, November 26 to announce their final list of retentions. The teams have traded a number of players in the last few days while a couple of high-profile names have also opted out of IPL 2024.
Kolkata Knight Riders
The Knight Riders have opted for another revamp, releasing as many as 12 players, but they’ve held onto Russell and Narine – who are also Knight Riders in various T20 leagues around the world. Moody reckons Gambhir’s return to KKR has something to do with Russell’s retention.
Ferguson’s release is understandable. He was nursing a hamstring injury during IPL 2023. He is currently nursing an Achilles injury. He played through that Achilles injury during the recent World Cup.

Young Padikkal – we wanted to strengthen our Indian top-order batting. He’s a good fielder and a fantastic team man. It’s part of our strategy to trade Avesh. Romario Shepherd was also traded. Daniel Sams was a tough one; he has been in fantastic form in franchise cricket around the world.
Gujarat Titans
Hardik Pandya headlines GT’s retention list. He is being listed as their captain. Nagraj Gollapudi reckons that the trade could still happen later. The trade window is still open.
“The Hardik trade can still happen, but it will be a player-player swap,” Nagraj Gollapudi says. “There is still room for that. We haven’t seen the end of this news yet.” WI fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been released along with Odean Smith and Dasun Shanaka.

Punjab Kings
Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Mohit Rathee, Baltej Dhanda, Raj Bawa and SRK have all been released by PBKS. They keep Sam Curran.
PBKS CEO Satish Menon speaks to Star Sports: “It was very difficult to decide who to release and who not to. Finally, it came down to a situation where we have to release some players because we have some slots to release.”
SRK’s departure will free up INR 9 crore for PBKS. Tom Moody reckons SRK will fit into the CSK set-up under Dhoni. SRK, btw, has also been part of the Junior Super Kings, CSK’s grassroots program, and in the IPL 2022 auction, CSK raised their bid up to 8.75 crore before PBKS eventually outbid them.
Rajastan Royals
Holder and McCoy are Royals in the CPL, but they’re now not part of their set-up in the IPL. England batter Joe Root has opted out of IPL 2024. Abdul Basith, Akash Vashisht, Kuldip Yadav, M Ashwin, KC Cariappa and KM Asif are the others players who have been released by RR.
Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket: We’re releasing a large number of players to free up the capital and space to buy requisite players in the mini-auction. Some of the released players could become RR squad players once again. We’re sorry to be releasing them, but it’s a necessity for us to release them now.
Delhi Capitals
Rovman Powell is among the high-profile players released by Capitals. Rilee Rossouw, Chetan Sakariya, Manish Pandey, Phil Salt, Mustafizur Rahman, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Ripal Patel, Sarfaraz Khan, Aman Khan, Priyam Garg are also out. Prithvi Shaw, though, has been retained by DC.
Tom Moody on Powell: I feel for Rovman Powell and he actually played well as a finisher for Capitals in 2022. This season they [DC] didn’t know what their overseas combination was. David Warner was consistent at the top and Marsh kept coming and going. Like the Sunrisers, when you have the uncertainty as a player, they never feel like they belong in the XI.
big money gone.
Maybe now they can FOCUS on CWI.
