West Indies were bowled out for 137 in their 201-run chase as Pakistan won the first T20I in Karachi by 63 runs on Monday (December 13). Pakistan as they take 1-0 lead in this three-match series. Pakistan now have 18 wins in T20Is in 2021, the most by any team in a year, beating their own record. They’ve completely outplayed West Indies tonight.

The stage was set by their batters – Mohammad Rizwan and Haider Ali struck half-centuries before Mohammad Nawaz’s cameo lifted them to 200.

Romario Shepherd had dismissed Fakhar Zaman after the latter and Mohammad Rizwan steadied Pakistan. The hosts lost captain Babar Azam in the first over.

Odean Smith, meanwhile, finished with 1-56 from his four overs. Shepherd had 2-23 from his first three overs but he was taken apart in his final over by Mohammad Nawaz, who struck three fours and a six over long-off in the 19th over which yielded 21 runs. Drakes dismissed Haider in the final over.

West Indies were never in the hunt during the chase. Shai Hope Scored 31 (26) and Odean Smith Scored 24(16) Rovman Powell (23 off 15) tried to revive the innings For West indies, but Pakistan were always ahead with the regular wickets.  Nawaz and Shadab strangled them while Mohammad Wasim kept on smashing the stumps. In the end, West Indies were bowled out in 19 overs. Shadab Khan picked up three wickets while Mohammad Wasim sneered four.

Earlier, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammed Rizwan and Haider Ali hit blistering fifties as the hosts ended up with 200 for six after being asked to bat first by West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran in the first T20I in Karachi. Rizwan scored 78 off 52 balls while Haider Ali smashed a 39-ball 68.

Babar Azam: The way we batted. The way Rizwan batted, and Haider, and the way we continued the momentum. The finish from Nawaz was outstanding. Spinners were getting good help. They put pressure on them. Will go back and see what combination we’ll have for tomorrow.

Nicholas Pooran: We gave away 20 runs in the field. Few boundaries were of edges so felt undone there. Felt we could’ve chased 200. Everyone knows we have a young bunch, comes down to execution. It’s about learning as fast as possible.
