The 2nd ODI between India and West Indies will be played on Sunday, the 24th of July at the same venue Trinidad, Port of Spain and it will begin at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT).
India beat West Indies by three runs in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series in Trinidad. West Indies needs to win the second ODI if they want to keep the series alive.
Chasing a record target, the West Indies could only score 305 for 6 in 50 overs. Kyle Mayers top-scored for the home side with 75 while Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King contributed 46 and 54 respectively.
West Indies had got off to a bad start in the chase, losing the early wicket of Shai Hope.
However, Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks steadied their ship, adding 117 runs for the second wicket.
Mayers hit a brilliant 74 while Brooks scored 46. Both were dismissed by Shardul Thakur in quick succession.
Brandon King also completed his fifty, and kept West Indies ticking in the chase. However, Yuvzvendra Chahal came up with a timely breakthrough to make the job tougher for the hosts.
Akeal Hosein and Romario Shepherd played unbeaten cameos of 32 and 39, respectively, but Siraj kept his composure in the final game to take India across the finishing line.
Jason Holder has been infected with Covid-19 and is unlikely to take part further in the ongoing three-match ODI series against India. He was earlier rested for the Bangladesh Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.
West Indies’ new captain Nicholas Pooran, during the toss in the first ODI, confirmed that Jason Holder has contracted Covid-19 and mentioned that the team remains the same from the last assignment against Bangladesh.
“Feels like a win for us,” Pooran said during the post-match presentation.
“Bittersweet, but yeah we keep talking about batting 50 overs and everyone saw what we are capable of and hopefully we can go strength to strength from here. Looking forward to the rest of the series,” he added.
Pooran also praised his bowlers for their late comeback after India openers laid a solid platform with a century stand. At one stage, India were 213/1 but then slipped to 252/5.
“It was a good batting track and our bowlers did a commendable job to restrict them. It’s difficult to lose but we will take this one. We need to believe in each other and I keep telling everyone that we will have our challenges, but important to focus on the positives,” Pooran said.
