Under-23 left-handed opener batsman Matthew Nandu was picked for the Guyana Warriors team in last year’s Caribbean Premier League and He has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.
“I feel honoured and excited to be a part of the Guyana Amazon Warriors. I’m grateful for the opportunity and looking forward to making use of it.” he said to News Room Sports.
The 19-year-old Mathew Nandu represented West Indies in the ICC Men’s Under-19 50-over World Cup earlier last year.
There he managed to score 152 runs in 7 matches with a century. and he was One of only three Caribbean players to score a century in the tournament.
Also, He said that his aim is to represent the West Indies National team.
“It’s a huge step towards achieving my aspirations (of playing international cricket). Being able to rub shoulders and train with some of the greats, is a great learning opportunity to ask questions, and learn as much as possible.”
Also, Sir Curtly Ambrose, assistant coach of the under-19 team, shared his views on Matthew Nandu in a special discussion with the ICC. There he said that they address him as little Shiv.
Describing it, West Indies legend Sir Curtly Ambrose said that everything about him was similar to Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
“I call him Little shiv. he’s so much like Shivnarine Chanderpaul. his mannerism, The way he walks, The way he bats. he’s got a big roll, he’s an open basement top of the order and what we keep saying to him is that your job is so special you got to lay the foundation for the orders to come. he’s one of those guys that could bat for long periods and accumulate his runs in a nice easy way.”
Also Nandu’s teammate Johann Lyne mentioned something like this.
“Nadu is a quiet guy. but he has a very big heart nandu can bring you from the lowest of places to the highest of places. He has a mindset like no other what he brings to the game what he brings to the team the energy. The mentality in this team he’s an asset.”
Finally, Matthew Nandu said that his hope is to play for the Guyana Jaguars and the West Indies as soon as possible in the next five years.
