A significant shift in West Indies cricket leadership has occurred, with Kraigg Brathwaite relinquishing his Test captaincy and Shai Hope assuming the T20I captaincy alongside his existing ODI role, as Cricket West Indies (CWI) prepares for a crucial home season and beyond.
Brathwaite, who informed CWI of his decision earlier this year, wanted to facilitate a smooth transition according to a CWI release on Monday,
He steps down ahead of the Australia Test series, allowing his successor time to settle.
Brathwaite, nearing 100 Test matches, will now focus solely on his batting.
His tenure, beginning in March 2021, was marked by historic triumphs, including a first Test victory in Australia for 27 years (Brisbane 2024), a series-levelling win in Pakistan (first in 34 years), a home series win against England (2022), and a series victory over Bangladesh (2021). CWI expressed profound gratitude for his service.
A new Test captain will be announced shortly.
Meanwhile, Shai Hope takes over the T20I captaincy from Rovman Powell, who led the side since May 2023.
Powell oversaw a T20 resurgence, securing home series wins against India, England, and South Africa, and guiding the team to the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He also contributed to the team’s rise from 9th to 5th in the ICC T20I rankings.
CWI thanked Powell for his leadership and contributions, emphasizing his role in elevating the T20 team.
This change aims to optimize Powell’s batting contributions.
Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe, praised Brathwaite’s leadership and acknowledged Powell’s professionalism, stating he “ought to feel dignified by his contributions.”
Head Coach Daren Sammy endorsed Hope’s appointment, citing his success in ODIs and his “analytical precision” and “calm and composed demeanor.”
CWI believes these leadership changes will provide stability and direction, propelling West Indies cricket forward across all formats.
