Highlights : Ireland lose to Jamaica Scorpions by five wickets in warm-up match

The Ireland Men’s cricket team is in Jamaica and is set to play a multi-format white-ball series against the West Indies between 8-16 January 2022. While the squads for both sides have been named, Ireland’s Paul Stirling is out of the first ODI after testing positive for COVID.

However, Ireland’s only 50-over warm-up match in the West Indies series was played at Sabina Park on Wednesday (05) against Jamaica Scorpions.

Ireland lost by five wickets to Jamaica Scorpions in that warm-up match for their forthcoming three-match ODI series with the West Indies at Sabina Park. The 28-year-old Rovman Powell struck four fours and six sixes in an unbeaten 63-ball knock of 82 and featured in a 94-run fifth-wicket partnership with Paul Palmer to take the Scorpions to victory.

George Dockrell top-scored with 82 as Ireland were all out for 234 with nine balls of their 50 overs remaining. Nicholson Gordon finished with bowling figures of 5-34 for Scorpions.

Jamaica replied with 235-5 off 38.4 overs, former West Indian captain Rovman Powell contributing 82 not out and Josh Little taking 3-21.

Chasing 235 for victory, the Scorpions were 23 for 2 before Brandon King (36) and Andrew McCarthy (48) put on 83 runs for the third wicket.

Pacer Josh Little took 3 for 21 in an impressive spell before King and McCarthy set the stage for Powell’s assault.

Andre McCarthy also made a substantial contribution with 48 as the hosts ultimately ran out comfortable winners in Kingstown.

With regular opener Paul Stirling unavailable, Andrew Balbirnie opened with William Porterfield for Ireland, the pair putting on an opening partnership of 38, before wickets began to fell regularly thereafter.

An eight wicket partnership of 55 between Dockrell and Mark Adair put the Irish back on track for their total of 234.

Ireland begin their World Cup Super League series against the West Indies on Saturday. The Irish squad had their preparations for the series upended with the cancellation of their three-match one-day series against the USA at the end of December because of Covid-19 related issues.
