“I can start back doing well for West Indies in ODI cricket.” – Nicholas Pooran hope back to his own form

Bangladesh, after a series of failures across formats, managed to register a win in the rain-marred first one-day international against West Indies at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, on Sunday.

After having limited the hosts to 149 for 9 in the 41-over-a-side contest, Bangladesh chased down the total with six wickets in hand and 9.1 overs to spare.

Several senior players of the West Indies team have retired and the current team consists of newcomers. Accordingly, the captain explained that we should play patiently as a team. Skipper Pooran shared his thoughts at the pre-match press conference.

“There are a lot of new guys in the team. I think we definitely need to play together more as a group and just have patience.”

Also,

“I just think that the ODI format is in between the Test and the T20, and mindsets keep changing. I think we just need to get the right mindset, the right template for this format, and stick with it for a bit.”

The West Indies team managed to spread its dominance throughout the tournament. The West Indies team managed to win the two Test matches 2-0 and the Twenty20 series 2-0.

The visitors could not win any of the five matches Played and the first Twenty20 match was abandoned due to rain.

“We’re looking forward to this Bangladesh series to settle on the right things and hopefully we’re successful at the end of the three games.”

West Indies beat the Netherlands 3-0 in Pooran’s first tournament as captain last month, but suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat to Pakistan.

West Indies have won only three of their last 10 ODIs and they have lost their last Four ODIs against Bangladesh. He also mentioned that the batsmen are repeatedly discussing how to negate the threat of Bangladesh spin.

Cradit: Cricket West Indies

“We’re just taking it ball by ball. We spoke as a group in the T20 how we want to play and we had a chat again today about how we want to play their spinners in this ODI series.”

As well as,

“We’re hoping that goes well and we won’t have this conversation [about playing spin] after this series.”

He also talked about the visitors’ players and said that their players are very good players.

“It’s all about discipline from our side and trying our best to stick to our game plans. We need to play the game the right way. They have good players as well and we need to respect that they are good players.”

However, the last few ODIs were not very successful for Skipper and he managed to score only 24 runs in three innings against the Netherlands and 57 runs in three more matches against Pakistan.

“It can be anyone’s game on the day. So we just need to continue doing the right things for a long period of time and we’ll be fine.”

He talked about his past style of playing here. Accordingly, they said that he needs to regain the right mentality of batting

“I’ve felt for the last six to nine games I haven’t performed for West Indies in the batting in the ODI format, and that is one of my favorite formats as well.”

And,

“I just need to get back the right mindset, how to bat in 50-over cricket. I think, once I can get that right mindset again, I can start back doing well for West Indies in ODI cricket.”
