“I feel as a leader he has been very calm and composed” – Suryakumar Yadav talks about Pollard’s leadership

The Inaugural edition of the International League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE is set to start on January 13 in Dubai. Therefore franchises have initiated preparation mode before the six-team tournament begins.

The six-team tournament is expected to feature 34 matches, with each side playing the others twice before four playoff matches. Featuring Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Desert Vipers, Dubai Capitals, Gulf Giants, MI Emirates and Sharjah Warriors.

Former West Indies captain and all-rounder Kieron Pollard has handed over his captain’s cap for Mumbai Indians franchise’s brother squad MI Emirates.

Suryakumar Yadav said in an exclusive chat with MI Emirates that Pollard kept them alive in the game and is expected to do the same when he leads MI E.

“I feel as a leader he has been very calm and composed. He has let everyone express themselves whether the team is under the pump or we’re on top. He’s always kept us alive in the game and very relaxed. So we feel very comfortable when he’s led MI and I am sure he will do the same when he leads MI E.”

Pollard’s association with Mumbai Indians, one of the most enduring relationships between a franchise and a player in the IPL, has come to an end. Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have released Kieron Pollard, their most senior player, to bring to a close a 13-year association that started in 2010 when Pollard was bought for an undisclosed sum via the tie-breaker rule.

In a statement, the all-rounder said that he is out of the IPL and his loyalty to his franchise is such that he cannot imagine representing any other team in the IPL. Pollard further stated that his move forward will not be an emotional farewell as he will be taking over as batting coach in the IPL.

Accordingly, Suryakumar is very excited to play under batting coach Pollard and his mentorship as well!

“His transition from captain to batting coach, I don’t know how it’s going to be (smiles). I am out of words right now. Until last year he was playing and now suddenly him talking about batting, watching us batting in the nets is going to be a completely different experience.”

“But I am sure it is going to be exactly how he plays his cricket. A different brand of cricket. He’s always been a livewire on the field, while batting and fielding. The same energy will flow when he is the batting coach as well. Very excited to have him.”

MI Emirates are scheduled to play their first match on Saturday (January 14).
