Scotland outplayed West Indies by 42 runs in a Group B clash between the sides at Bellerive Oval, Hobart on Monday. Defending their 160, Scotland bundled out Windies for 118 runs in 18.3 overs.
The third match of the T20 World Cup 2022 was played between West Indies and Scotland under Group B. After winning the toss, the West Indies captain invited Scotland to bat first.
In the first few overs, the match was interrupted by rain, but it could not have any effect on the match. George Munsey and Michael Jones managed to give Scotland a successful start and they both built a partnership of 55 runs for the first wicket.
Jason, who was the most successful bowler of the West Indies team in this match, removed Michael Jones from the field for 20 runs as the first wicket. Calum MacLeod scored 23 runs for Scotland and opener Munsey scored an unbeaten 66 off 53 balls to propel his team to 160 for 5.
In bowling, all-rounder Jason Holder took two wickets for 14 runs in three overs, fast bowler Joseph took two wickets each in his quota and Odean Smith took one wicket for 31 runs.
In Reply, West Indies will be very disappointed with their performance. They were extremely poor with the bat. They were off to a good start but post the 6th over, they lost wickets in heaps. After the top three, just one batter crossed the 10-run mark and that was Holder. The game just came all down to his performance but it was too much of an ask from him. In the end, they have fallen short by a big margin.
Chasing 161, Kyle Mayers and Evin Lewis were unable to get the two-time champions West Indies off to a flying start. Mayers was out for the first wicket on 20 and Lewis was out on 53. Once again the captain failed and left the field at 5 runs.
King was out for 17 and top scorer Jason scored 38 off 33 balls. Accordingly, due to the usual weak batting of the West Indies team, the Scottish bowlers managed to limit the West Indies innings to 118 runs.
For Scotland, Mark Watt took 3 wickets for 12 runs and Brad wheal and Leask took two wickets each. Munsey scored an unbeaten 66 and was the of the match. Accordingly, the Scottish team took the lead in Group B with an easy win of 42 runs.
West Indies Captian Nicholas Pooran says after heartbreaking defeat the team needs to take accountability after West Indies suffered a 42-run defeat against Scotland.
“Tough loss for us, obviously disappointed. We have to work hard and win two games. We have to take accountability and responsibility,” said Pooran.
The 27-year-old said they have to put this loss behind them and want the next game to come as fast as possible.
“We have to put this loss behind us and pick ourselves up. Sometimes, when you lose games and perform bad as players, you want the next game to come as fast as possible,” Pooran added.
“From a team point of view, we spoke about hitting Scotland hard – no matter who we play – and in the powerplay [with the ball] we took time to assess conditions,” said Pooran.
After this loss, West indies must-win situation their qualifying matches against Zimbabwe on Wednesday and Ireland on Friday.
