“when I came here, every thing from that series came back to my mind.” Gayle recalls IND vs WI ‘low-scoring’ thriller from 2002 in Barkatullah Khan Stadium, India

After last year’s T20I World Cup, West Indies destroyer Chris Gayle has not played any international matches till now and has also played few franchise cricket.

Accordingly, he played in the Bangladesh Premier League and ‘6ixty’, a T10 tournament organized in the West Indies.

Then there is the devastating opener Chris Gayle who is currently in India for the Legends League cricket tournament where he is representing Gujarat Giants.

Gayle has been an integral part of the West Indies team for years, and he arrived in Jodhpur a few days ago for the Legend s League cricket tournament.

The former Windies star recalled a game he played against India at the venue – the Barkatullah Khan Stadium – and also revealed his conversation with Sehwag over the same.

In 2002, India and West Indies clashed at the venue, in which Gayle scored 27 runs and West Indies scored 201 runs. However, Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh scored half-centuries and India went past the target with 22 balls to spare.

“20 years is a long time. Sehwag didn’t even remember it. We were talking about it and then we googled the scorecard. It was actually a low-scoring game and India won it. But honestly, that match is now pretty exciting to us because we are back in the same city.”

In the year 2002, 07 one-day matches were held in that tournament and the last match was the deciding match as both the teams were tied at 3-3. West Indies, who were the visitors, had won matches 1, 2, 5 and India 3, 4, and 6 in the ODI series.

In the crucial final, the visitors batted first and scored 315 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Wavel Hinds scored 58 runs, Ramnaresh Sarwan scored 83 runs and Man of the Match Marlon Samuel scored an unbeaten 108 runs. However, the host India scored only 180 runs in 36.5 overs and the visitors won by mammoth 135 runs. According to Gale,

“I remember the series in 2002. We had lost in Jodhpur and the series was level at 3-3, but then we won the series. We sort of forget these things with time but when I came here, everything from that series came back to my mind.”

Both Sehwag and Gayle are representing Gujarat Giants in the Legends League cricket tournament and Sehwag is the captain of Gujarat Giants who has already qualified for the finals of the tournament.
