The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 mini-auction concluded after a record-breaking bidding day in Dubai, laying the groundwork for what should be another exciting season of T20 cricket. 10 franchises spent a whopping INR 230 cr on 72 players, including 30 overseas players.
The auction saw a record-breaking bid for Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc who made history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction on Tuesday, with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) securing his services for an unprecedented Rs 24.75 crore (USD 2,982,000).
The 33-year-old Starc is set to return to the IPL after an eight-year gap, having previously played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Starc outbid his compatriot Pat Cummins, the World Cup-winning captain, who held the new record for just an hour before being picked up by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a significant sum of Rs 20.50 crore. (approximately USD 2,470,000)
New Zealand All-rounder Darryl Mitchell went to defending champions Chennai Super Kings for 14 crore (approximately USD 1,687,000).
In comparison, Indian pacer Harshal Patel went to the Punjab Kings for 11.75 crore (approximately USD 1,412,000) to round out the top five buys.
When look into the West Indies, Seven Players went under the hammer in the auction, four of which were sold while Odean Smith, Keemo Paul, Jason Holder and Akeal Hosein were unsold.
Alzarri Joseph, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, and Shai Hope were the only West Indians selected at Tuesday’s 2024 Indian Premier League Auction in Dubai.
Joseph, who has previous IPL experience with the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, was the most expensive West Indian and the fifth most expensive player, going to the Royal Challengers Bangalore for 11.5 crore (USD 1,386,000).
West Indies T20I skipper Rovman Powell was the first player up for grabs on Tuesday, going for 7.4 crore (approximately USD 892,000) to the Rajasthan Royals after a bidding war with the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sherfane Rutherford was the next West Indian to be picked up, going to the Kolkata Knight Riders for 1.5 crore (approximately USD 181,000).
ODI skipper Shai Hope earned a maiden IPL contract, signing with the Delhi Capitals for 75 lakh (USD 90,500).
