The fifth match of the CG Insurance Super50 Cup was played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Tuesday and the Leeward Islands Hurricanes registered their second win of the tournament with an emphatic 68-run win over the Jamaican Scorpions.
Batting first, openers Devon Thomas (38) and Ross Powell (27) gave the Leewards a good start. However, with the fall of Rose Powell’s wicket, a procession of wickets came with the scoreboard reading 76-5.
Rahkeem Cornwall combined with Terence Ward to put on a 120-run partnership for the sixth wicket and Cornwall scored 81 runs off 72 balls with 7 fours and 5 sixes. Ward played an anchoring role with a 63-ball 32.
West Indies leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr’s 35 and Kofi James’ unbeaten 25 provided some late innings impetus to take the Hurricanes to 270-9 at the end of their 50 overs.
Scorpions all-rounder Odean Smith took 4-46 from 8 overs to destroy the Leewards middle order. Apart from that, Mindley shared two wickets and one wicket each between Royal, Gordon, and Merchant.
Chasing 271, Scorpions openers Brandon King and Jermaine Blackwood then got off to a good start, before King was dismissed for 32 in the 10th over to see the Scorpions scoreboard 54 runs.

After building a 31-run stand for the second wicket with Nkrumah Bonner, Blackwood was out for 31 in the 18th over, which proved to be the deciding factor of the match. Bonner ended up the top scorer with 44 runs while captain Rowman Powell added 24 runs.
However, Scorpions scored only 202 runs by losing 9 wickets in the stipulated period. Off-spinner Kofi James took 4 wickets for 32 runs in 10 overs and Gore took two wickets and Walsh, Archibald, and Cornwall each shared one wicket.
Koffi James, who scored 25 runs unbeaten and took 04 wickets for 32 runs, was named the man of the match. Leeward Islands Hurricanes managed to take the lead in Zone B group with this victory.
