Here are the players who could be the next white ball captain of the West Indies team – Check full list

The West Indies side suffered embarrassing defeats at the hands of Scotland and Ireland as the former champions failed to enter the Super 12 phase of the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Their rankings in all three formats are at an all-time low and most recently Two-time champions West Indies were dumped out of the ICC event after the Pooran-led side finished bottom in the group stage at the T20 World Cup.

With the early exit from the World Cup, West Indies head coach Phil Simmons resigned.

In addition, West Indies white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran announced a few days ago that he also step down as captain of the west indies white ball team. Critics felt that due to the increased pressure and responsibility, Pooran was unable to achieve what was expected of him.

Right now, West Indies needs to get the next lead right as the road to becoming world champions once again is very steep and uphill. However, the next leadership may not be as easy as many think, as there are very limited candidates to choose from.

As there is a lack of leadership qualities among the current West Indies players, only a few names can be considered for the next captaincy, the foremost being Jamaican Rowman Powell and former Test and ODI captain Jason Holder.

In addition, Guyana’s Shimron Hetmyer, Barbados’ Shai Hope, and Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite could be named.

01. Jason Holder

Jason, who became the West Indies ODI captain at the age of 23, had a tough time in his career. Out of the 37 Test matches he captained, he lost 21 matches and won only 11 matches. Out of 86 matches led in ODI format, 24 matches were won and 54 were lost. Apart from that, he captained three T20 matches and lost all the three matches.

The 31-year-old Jason is now eight years out of captaincy and is one of three West Indies players currently involved in all three formats. He has shown tremendous growth in all three formats so far, and at one point was ranked among the top three all-rounders in the world.

02. Rovman Powell

Powell is another player at the top of many leaderboards due to his recent achievements. The 2022 CPL T20 title and his latest, the regional Super 50 crown, as he led Jamaica to victory, are the main reasons.

However, Powell is not an outstanding batsman or bowler, nor is he a tactical genius on the field. Powell’s strength as a captain will be his form with the bat and if that doesn’t come to him, he, like Pooran, will be in big trouble.

He has led the West Indies team for 4 international matches out of which they have won 2 and lost 2. However, due to his humility and ability to learn quickly, as well as leading his team to the title in the last few tournaments, many believe that he will be the next white ball captain.

03. Shai Hope

The Barbadian player Hope’s ODI record is one of the most impressive, having scored 4308 runs in 99 innings at a high average of 48.95. And he claims 21 fifties and 13 centuries.

He has no international experience as a captain but he was credited with leading the Barbados team in the recently concluded CG Super 50 series. There he won 3 out of 6 matches and lost one. However, Shai Hope could also be a good name as the captain of the vacant regional team.

04. Shimron Hetmyer

The left-handed batsman has scored 1447 runs with 05 centuries and 04 fifties in 44 ODI innings and 497 runs in 42 T20 innings with 04 fifties.

One of Hetmyer’s successes as a captain is leading the West Indies to win the Under-19 Twenty20 World Cup in 2016. In addition to this, he was also the captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors and under him, the Warriors recorded 5 victories in 10 matches.

Players like Keemo Paul, Alzzari Joseph, Odean Smith Obed McCoy, who played under Hetmyer’s leadership in 2016, are playing in the current team. There is room to consider Hetmayard as a leader.

Apart from this, Brandon King, Alzzari Joseph, Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite can also be considered.

  1. A person who is not available even on his own timing will let us down. I will not go around any corner. as a Jamaican, ardent W I fan Jason is my captain
Pow Pow needs time to grow into the job just as Jason did..The time he got it wasn’t the right time. The big cat was partly responsible for that if my memory serves me well.. Then he was one of those who came down hard on Jason for not delivering.

Leave pow pow out until he is ready.
