“Lewis told us he’s committed to West Indies cricket”; Haynes on Evin Lewis’ recall for West Indies squad for T20 WC

West Indies have named Evin Lewis, the left-handed opening batter, in their 15-man squad for the upcoming 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup.

Lewis, 30, last played for the West Indies in the T20 World Cup last year but couldn’t make the cut since due to fitness related reasons.

“Someone like Evin Lewis, we all agree that he’s our best one-day cricketer, he’s done so well for us over the years, We had a meeting with him, and he’s committed to West Indies cricket he told us that he’s committed to West Indies cricket, and I believe he should be given the opportunity.” ” Haynes told the commentator Ian Bishop, during CPL action between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots Wednesday.

The squad also includes two uncapped players in Yannic Cariah (right-arm leg-spinner allrounder) and Raymon Reifer (left-arm batting allrounder).

Cariah, 30, plays for Trinidad & Tobago and Trinbago Knight Riders, and made his ODI debut last month. On the other hand, 31-year-old Reifer, who is the son of former West Indies captain Floyd Reifer, has already played Tests and ODIs for the West Indies, and made his international debut way back in 2017

“I think Yannic has impressed us from the time we picked him for the A team,” said Haynes.

“ We’ve got a lot of confidence in him—we think that he’s bowling well enough that [he] can play in the T20 format. It’s a bit unfortunate that he’s not in the CPL [but] we have no control over that.” he added

“We think that he is a guy who can do a job for us. I don’t think you can underrate his batting either.”

Two-time champions West Indies will face Scotland, Zimbabwe and Ireland in the opening round in Australia for a place in the Super 12s
