The Guyana Amazon Warriors have done what they do best!
Throughout this year’s edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), they played really well and accomplished their supporters’ hopes as Tahir led Guyana Amazon Warriors their First ever CPL trophy Win with The convincing 9-wicket victory over the Trinbago Knight Riders, the Four time champions, on Sunday.
It was one of those games that you had to watch live to really appreciate the hunger the Warriors seem to have this year.
And captain Imran Tahir, who should be an honorary Guyanese by this point, seems to be the hungriest of us all.
To be fair, has there been a game when Tahir didn’t turn things around, or try to turn things around, with his bowling?
And whether it’s asking spin extraordinaire Gudakesh Motie to defend six overs in a last-over thriller in an earlier game against the Barbados Royals or backing the boys and their capabilities, hasn’t he been a good captain overall?
What a performance by GAW. They have been on fire after inserting their opponents in. Just 94 from TKR in a big final. None except Keacy Carty got going. They kept losing wickets and never recovered.
No-one gave Carty company as they left one after the other. Pretorius with a four-fer and he was the pick of the bowlers. Took out the big wicket of Pooran.
The spinners – Motie and Tahir too were superb through the middle overs. A very poor performance from TKR
Shai hope (32) and Ayub (52) chase down it esaily for GAW and claimed their maiden CPL title.
Imran Tahir is very emotional at the WINNING MOMEMT. He gets warm hugs from his teammates.
“It’s a special feeling. Lot of people said a lot of negative things. Really proud father, player and captain (on winning the title). I just want to thank the almighty. I kept believing in myself. Love you everyone, thank you CPL” says an emotional Tahir.
After five losses in the finals previously, they’ve got the crown with their sixth attempt. It’s only fitting that the Warriors are winners this season.
They have the top two run getters in their team – Hope and Ayub. They also have the top two wicket takers of the season in their team – Pretorius and Tahir.
After a no result first game, they pulled off six successive wins and only lost once in the 10-game league stage.
