West Indies Women and Trinidad and Tobago off-spinner Anisa Mohammed has been given an opportunity to serve as an ambassador/mentor for the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup.
The ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in South Africa from January 14 to 29, 2023, and will consist of 41 T20I matches. The competing countries are Australia, Bangladesh, UAE, Scotland, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, USA, West Indies, South Africa, Ireland, Pakistan, Rwanda, England, Zimbabwe, New Zealand, and Indonesia.
After taking a six-month break from the game, Mohammed announced on social media on Thursday that she was heading to South Africa.
“On my way to South Africa as the ICC Ambassador/Consultant for the Under-19 Women’s World Cup.”
The 34-year-old did not reveal any other details about her role in the global tournament, which will be held in South Africa from February 10 to 23, 2023.
Mohammed is one of the icons of the global women’s game and has represented the West Indies for two decades. She has taken the most wickets in ODIs (180) and T20Is (125) for the West Indies in a cricketing career spanning from 2003 to date.
Mohammad is globally ranked fourth among the highest wicket-takers in ODI history and is currently the highest wicket-taker in T20I history as well.
She is also the 9th woman to take a hat-trick in T20I cricket, a feat against South Africa at the Brian Lara Stadium in September 2018. Additionally in December 2020. Also, Mohammed was named in the ICC ODI Team of the Decade.
The West Indies Women’s U19 team is captained by Guyanese player Ashmini Munisar. Captain Ashmini Munisar expressed her happiness in being selected to lead the squad,
“It is every cricketer’s dream to play for their country let alone be able to captain their team, it is an immense honor that I get to do it at this historic inaugural ICC Women’s U19 World Cup. We have been playing together for the past few months and all the players are gelling and progressing quite nicely and we’re all excited to represent the West Indies.”
