SA20 Match 9, Match Highlights; Odean Smith’s 3 wickets goes vain as Sunrisers Eastern Cape to first SA 20 victory

MICT suffered a four-wicket defeat against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) in Gqeberha on Monday, January 16.

They posted 158/8 after being asked to bat first and couldn’t prevent Aiden Markram and Co. from chasing down the target with three deliveries to spare.

Markram (50 off 35) and Sarel Erwee (41 off 35) added 92 runs for the third wicket to lay the platform for the run chase.

With Eastern Cape chasing 159 at St George’s Park, West Indies fast bowler Odean Smith struck twice in the 14th over, first removing captain and top-scorer Aiden Markram (50) and then knocking over Jordan Cox (1), to leave the innings stuttering on 109 for five.

Tristan Stubbs then revived the chase with an 18-ball 30 but when Smith also prised him out with the first ball of the final over.

But Tristan Stubbs has not quite hit the ground running thus far, but the most expensive player purchased at the SA20 auction was determined to take his team over the line on Monday. Stubbs then smoked an 18-ball 30 to all but seal the game in the Sunrisers’ favor.
