ICC T20 World Cup 2022 is set to kickstart later this month in Australia. A total of 16 teams are part of the tournament.
The tournament will witness 45 matches. The opening game will be played on October 16 while the final is scheduled to be played on November 13, 2022.
Out of the 16 teams, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Namibia, Scotland, UAE, Zimbabwe, Netherlands and Ireland are part of the qualifier round and will play the qualifier round first. 4 teams out of these will join the super 12 round.
In this year’s T20 World Cup, the West Indies team Will be playing qualifier Group B with Ireland, Scotland, and Zimbabwe are rivals. The former West Indies Skipper said that such countries are not pushovers at all.
In the recently concluded interview, Sir Curtly Ambrose has expressed his views on the West Indies team’s World Cup journey this year. He predicts a tough road ahead for West Indies.
But Legendary West Indies fast bowler believes with the right mindset Nicholas Pooran-led squad can progress past the World Cup qualifiers and perform in the Super 12.
“There are a couple of names that I have a little question mark over, but that’s just Curtly Ambrose, but the team is already selected so we would have to support them.
The first thing is to get out of the qualifiers and it is not going to be easy because we have Scotland, Ireland and Zimbabwe, I think, so it is not going to be an easy pushover. But we have the players who can win games and get out of that qualifying stage,” he said.
Sir Curtly said the team must play smart cricket by exercising patience and playing as a unit.
“We have to understand that there are times when the bowling is good enough that you have to respect that where you pick up ones and twos. The boundaries will come. The power-hitting will come because guys are going to present boundary opportunities,
but we have to get away from the mindset that it is all about power-hitting. If we continue to think that way then, more often than not, we will struggle. Ones and twos are important as well … so we can’t just go into any game looking to hit boundaries all the time,” he said.
West Indies’ only side ever to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice, it didn’t click for the West Indies in the UAE and Oman as they finished fifth in Group 1 (2021).
