West Indies legend and one of the finest batsmen to have ever played the game, Brain Lara’s name was etched into the echelons of cricketing history on June 6, 1994.
While playing for Warwickshire against Durham, the left hander shattered all records to his 501* in a single innings to set the record for the highest runs scored in a First Class game.
Lara broke several records an route his special innings, first surpassing legendary Don Bradman’s 452* and crossing Hanif Mohammad’s 499, made on the domestic circuit of Pakistan.
Lara, the former West Indies captain, went on a rampage chasing 556 runs scored in the first innings by Durham. He was aided by luck, first after being bowled off a no ball at 12, and then getting dropped by the wicketkeeper when he was at 18.
Warwickshire remembered the feat with a special tweet saying: “One of the greatest innings. Can’t believe it was 28 years ago today!”

The batsman piled runs at a rapid pace, hitting 42 boundaries and 10 sixes. After Lara was done with Durham, Warwickshire had posted 810 runs in the first innings, forcing the match to end in a draw. He took 427 balls to reach his feat.
Lara stayed at the crease for 474 minutes and remained not out after scoring 501 runs off 427 balls. His innings consisted of 62 boundaries and 10 sixes. His strike rate was an impressive 117.33 in the innings.
Warwickshire wicketkeeper Keith Piper (116 not out off 151 balls) also scored a century as the Dermot Reeve-led side ultimately declared their innings at 810/4 in 135.5 overs. The match had eventually resulted in a draw.
Overall, in first-class cricket the 53-year-old West Indian batter played 261 matches and amassed 22156 runs at an average of 51.88. Lara has 65 centuries and 88 half centuries to his name in first-class cricket.
